Downtown Club
18-20 West Street

, New York City

Originally designed by Starrett & Van Vleck, this 35 story Art Deco skyscraper opened in 1930 as the Downtown Athletic Club. Now a New York City Landmark, the original design incorporated athletic facilities and sleeping rooms. In 2007, AKM Architects converted the building into 289 residential condominium units. Subtle alterations to the historic shell accommodate programmatic and code required facilities. For example, new masonry openings in formerly windowless areas were designed to match original windows.
